More Ruskin, some Deepika

From recent news items:

More Ruskin Bond's Saat Khoon Maaf appearance: Times of India - 23rd August (featuring the tidbit that Bond and Bhardwaj are now neighbours in Mussoorie)

The news that Deepika Padukone has signed a Vishal film (is he directing or simply producing?), to be featured opposite Saif Ali Khan. More prayers for non-actor to actor transformations.

No. no. no. no. no. Vishal seems to be majorly infected by the Mani Ratnam bug - of picking the worst of the lot. As if to tell, "Look World!, in spite of such bad actors, I can make such great films!"

Abhi, the "Mani Ratnam" bug is about making movies that look wonderful, feature great attention to songs and choreography and offer some modicum of quality but are ultimately dross despite snagging stars from Northlywood and Southlywood. Vishal might share something with Mani in wanting to explore the range of some star, but, IMNSHO, does a far better job of it (and I am only looking at Mani's Bollywood ouevre -- I cannot say anything about the Tamil canon, because I cannot possibly relate to the native aura of the stars embellishing his films).

Agreed, Vishal has extracted some fine performances so far from his actors. But till date, he's not really gone for the wooden lot. He is making a mad dash for them now, and that has me up in arms.

Hopefully, he just stops with the two of them - Deepika and Aishwarya.
